DoD PKI Stands Up a SIPRNet Token Issuance System: The DoD PKI PMO would like to announce the introduction of a hardware token for use on the SIPRNet. The use of these new SIPRNet smart cards (similar to CACs on the NIPRNet) will increase the level of security across the SIPRNet by providing two factor authentication for smart card logon, web based authentication, and secure mail.
The DoD PKI PMO is currently conducting a 2500 user pilot focused on the distribution and issuance of the tokens and the use of the certificate on the SIPRNet. The pilot will be used to validate the operational requirements, the SIPRNet PAT CONOPS, and user requirements prior to deploying the full scale production system.
The production release of the SIPRNet Token Management System (TMS) is expected in the Spring of 2010. This new system will enable users to securely transport their SIPRNet credentials from site to site as well as enable interoperability between DoD SIPRNet users and Federal, State, Coalition Partners and Allies.

Public Key Infrastructure: PKI is a service of products
which provide and manage X.509 certificates for public key
cryptography. Certificates identify the individual named in
the certificate, and bind that person to a particular public/private
key pair. DoD PKI provides the data integrity, user identification
and authentication, user non-repudiation, data confidentiality,
encryption and digital signature services for programs and
application, which use the DoD networks
